Painting IV assignment - the use of color for a hyberbolie
I think a lot about American propaganda and the uses back in WWI and WWII and how it's used now, what America is trying to say to it's people and how the two would be meshed. I wrote out a rough artist statement, went a little like this (forgive the spelling errors);
In the 40’s and 50’s, the height of Americanism, propaganda was a very useful tool. With the Government only needing to control news, radio, TV, and posters pushing the idea of “America (and Americans) Under God” was fairly simple. America was a philosophy, an idea, an illusion that worked. Yet today Americans, although not necessarily smarter, are better informed. At least they have access to a more diverse array of different ideas. The generations of the 40’s and 50’s will soon be gone, with a younger generation to take over, a generation that doesn't easily buy into the “America Under God” of their fathers. With a generation as such in control of democracy, will democracy continue on? Or will this next generation fall into power over the country with the ideals that their fathers once held dear, only to succumb to apathy to the beliefs that they once fought to uphold and protect? Either way, we're doomed. God help us.
